Jill
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” John 4:10
Jack and Jill
Went up a hill
To fetch a pail of water…
When they got to the top of the hill
A man was standing there
He started sharing the Gospel with them
And all they could do was stare
Jill walked away feeling offended
His words had cut her deep
“Repent and receive living water
You are the lost sheep”
The man had spoken of a Jesus
Who made blind men see
Who died and rose victorious
For pitiful sinners like me
Those are the words that had wounded
Repentance and sinner
God had no right to label her so
But then her repertoire of defenses grew thinner
She lived her life autonomously
Made selfish decisions every day
She finally mentally admitted
That she was tired of living this way
She felt an emptiness
A desire for something more
The materialism and frivolities of life
Were vulgarizing and a bore
Self-love had been a fabrication
Relativism an appealing lie
People disappointed her increasingly
As every day crept by
Jill was used to fetching water
Every morning with the sun
In the pail she carried with Jack
They would laugh, joke, and run
Although the water they retrieved
Quenched their thirst for a short time
The next day would be repetitive
As up the hill they would have to climb
She thought of the man’s message
She thought of his claims of living water
She thought of a God in heaven
Who wanted to call her His daughter
This water would eternally cause her
To never thirst again
Repent and believe in Jesus Christ
Surrender and let Him in
Jill began to cry
And Jack didn’t know what to say
She silently repented, acknowledged the truth
And fell to her knees to pray
She thanked God for the gifts
Of grace and her new-found faith
Only God could have shown her this
And made her crooked paths straight
Jack and Jill
Went up a hill
To fetch a pail of water…
What Jill brought down was more than drink
It was John 4’s spring of water
Welling up to eternal life
Spent glorifying the God who sought her
